By now I’m sure you’re aware that iOS4, the next revision to Apple’s mobile operating system set for release June 21st, will bring features such as the ability to change your homescreen wallpaper, make folders for your apps based on their genre among other things.
But today we got a tip of another, obviously hidden, feature of the software, one which we’ve not seen documented by anyone else yet. Twitter user @Shabzcohelp notes that while checking his e-mails to track a shipment on iOS4 GM candidate, he noticed that the OS automatically picked up a number for the purpose of tracking, and when tapped, the OS offered him the option to ‘Track Shipment’.
We’re not exactly aware of how it fully works due to not having our hands on iOS4 anymore, but we’re guessing the option would open up the built-in @Google maps app, and allow you to track your package’s location in real-time, using the device’s built in GPS unit or if that wasn’t available, Wi-Fi triangulation.
[Update] – It seems we were wrong about the Google Maps part. @stroughtonsmith notes the software kicks the user out to the respective tracking website in Mobile Safari.
“It kicks you out to the web page tracking system for each service. Is pretty cool.”
[Update 2] – Twitter user’s @TobyAdams and @stroughtonsmith have confirmed the feature does exist in iOS4 GM candidate.
