Not Keen On iAds? Opt Out – [HOWTO]

In April, Apple announced it would be moving into the advertising business by selling its own adverts for use with its iOS platform. They’re calling these ads iAds, and with $60M worth of committed sponsors looking to trial the new ad platform, its looking like iAds is going to be another hit for Apple.

But what about the consumer? What about us? The people who matter. The people who buy Apple’s products in the first place. Do we really want to be force fed these adverts? For the most part I’m guessing you would answer no to that question. Wish there was an opt out? – today, you can!

A new section on Apple.com located here, which can reportedly only be accessed on a device which is running iOS4, allows the user to completely opt out of Apple’s iAds campaign.

Okay, not completely. In fact, reading Apple’s support document on the opt out reveals you’re hardly opting out of anything at all, really.

So much for the opt out, Apple.

    To Arron,

I'm sorry, but expecting Apple to offer a way to disable iAds is naive. You're assuming
Also, two things to point out.
    • Consumers are not being force-fed iAds. Apple does not ship it's operating system littered with these – adverts appear within the applications that developers publish to the app store.
    • iAds are no different then existing AdMob advertisements. Developer use these to gain money. Developers who place advertisements in their products rely on them for revenue – the same you rely on the advertisements on your site for revenue. Allowing consumers to opt out of iAds for free makes them irrelevant.

In closing, the only way one could opt out of iAds would be on a per-app basis, most likely for a fee. It's nothing new, we've seen it before, and it's how advertisements work in most native applications. While there is always a chance that they will pop up in paid applications, that is the developers fault, not Apple's.
