First iPhone 4 in Australia? Yes, Please.

So, if you follow me on Twitter you would have seen that I am very excited for numerous reasons, not only the success of RecBoot (a free utility for Windows and Mac users which allow you to put your iPhone or iPod Touch into recovery mode easily) but also because I have an iPhone 4 being shipped straight from the UK to my front door in Australia!

I had the great opportunity to have an iPhone 4 shipped to my place and boy did I seize it with both hands. Although it might be setting those people in the UK back £599 GBP (32GB), I was lucky to cut a deal with my father to only have to pay $600AUD for it, including shipping! However, there are a few things that I must do in anticipation for its arrival is in fact, cut my normal SIM down to a Micro-SIM. Unfortunately my carrier, Optus Australia, haven’t released Micro-SIMS suitable for the iPhone 4. They have however, released “FLASHED” Micro-SIMS for the iPad which only allowed Data coverage. Thus, I am in a tight situation between cutting my SIM card down to a Micro-SIM or waiting for Optus to release one.

My choice, cut it. Of course, generally, anyone sane enough would be worried. So, with the aid of one of my friends at school, I decided to purchase this so as to make sure I cut down my normal SIM perfectly. My main concern now is that the tool won’t arrive until a few days after my iPhone 4.

The next issue was the discoloration that other early-adopters of the iPhone 4 had experienced. I am worried about this mainly due to the fact that seeing as though the iPhone 4 was originally purchased in the UK, I’m still uncertain as to if the warranty will extend worldwide? I have reason to believe that it won’t, however I am praying that when the iPhone 4 is finally released officially here in Australia, that the warranty does in fact extend.

Another issue that I am extremely worried about is the “loss of reception” which many users have been complaining about when it comes to iPhone 4. Now, I take this with a grain of salt, but still worry a little bit. The fact that my SIM has to be cut in the first place makes me worry a tiny bit extra that it will experience reception loss, but with Apple stating that it happens with all phones, I have decided to take it with nothing to worry about at all.

Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.

This “reception loss” has been detailed over and over again .. which brings me to another issue. I have to purchase an iPhone Bumper case or something of the same equivalency. This again will be difficult in finding something here in Australia that will actually fit the iPhone 4. Hence why my idea is to cover it with the current case I’m using for my iPhone 3Gs. Not only will it look like an iPhone 3Gs, but I won’t get mugged here! .. hopefully.

I hope you’re all as excited about the iPhone 4 as I am. I should have mine on Monday and I’ll no doubt update you all as soon as I get it!
