Got the iPhone 4 “Death Grip” Reception Issue? iOS 4.0.1 Dropping As Early As Monday!

If you have an iPhone 4 yourself, you may have noticed the immediate issue that the new antenna system causes. See, for iPhone 4 Apple changed the way the antennas are positioned in the device.

To make sure they didn’t have to spoil the new design by having a huge docking black bar running along the top of the phone, Apple decided to integrate the antenna into the actual structure of the phone. Hidden from view in what Jobs called “really cool engineering”.

But the change has caused an issue which has so far been able to be reproduced by costumers in all five launch countries. Its called the ‘Death Grip’. So, what is it? Well if you happen to hold your new iPhone 4 in your left hand with the bottom left quadrant of your palm covering the bottom left corner of the phone, you may start to see a change in signal strength when connected over 3G.

In fact, the video below shows just how bad the issue is, with some customers seeing their service drop out to ‘No Service’.

But according to @AppleInsider the issue may thankfully be short lived, with the site reporting their readers browsing Apple’s tech support forums noticed a thread which originally confirmed that a software fix addressing the issue would ship early next week (as early as Monday), before the evidence was taken down.

The new update is said to be a small one which is specifically designed to solve the software issue which currently causes the visual side of the signal indicator to decrease when iPhone 4 is held in this position.

Apparently, users with the issue shouldn’t fear too much though, as the issue is entirely software based meaning even if you see a drop in signal, your signal strength hasn’t actually changed physically.
