Anyone who knows me knows this: I am a movie buff. I love everything about the industry, and I hope to become a cinematographer one day. If you’re a movie fan like me, or just want a good movie application, look no further.
There’s quite a few movie applications in the app store as of writing this. Hopefully, I can narrow down your decision on which one most deserves a spot on your iPod Touch/iPhone. Here’s three popular movie apps that you might want to check out.
1. Movies by Flixster
‘Movies’ by Flixster is a popular, free movie application out there in the app store. The first thing you’ll probably notice is that the app is supported by advertisements. They aren’t too obtrusive, but it might bother you from time to time.
Flixster is really a community based review site. You go see the movie, and post a review. Now, looking at some of the reviews, I’d say they are… less than reliable, at best. You have the option to change between two different (Flixster, Rotten Tomatoes) review sites, though.
You can connect your Flixster account with your Facebook account, submit your own reviews, and look at your friend’s movie reviews, which is a nice feature.
Viewing the upcoming releases and current releases is very simple, with a scrolling menu with the movie poster, rating, lead actors/actresses, rating, runtime, and release date for each film. Selecting the film brings you to a more detailed page where you can watch the trailer on the fly along with adding your own rating, and check screening times.
You can enter your ZIP code and select theaters near you, which is a must-have in any movie application. You can check upcoming DVD releases as well.
‘Movies’ by Flixster comes with some good features that you’d expect in a movie application. The ads might annoy you at times, but hey, it’s free. The interface works, but at times can see a bit off. Connectivity to your Facebook account is a cool feature as well. If you’re into the community aspect, you might want to check this one out.

2. Now Playing by Cyrus Najmabadi
‘Now Playing’ is another movie app available to users. What I like about Now Playing is how simple it is. It shows releasing in chronological order, gives you the rating from the review site of your choice, along with the rating and runtime. Selecting the film will bring you to a more detailed page.
The options that Now Playing gives you are fantastic. Select your location, search distance, and the date, to find movies and theaters near you. Select your preferred movie review source, bookmarks, indicators, the whole nine yards.
Have a Netflix account? Now Playing has built-in Netflix support, a very nice feature for those who use the service.
Searching for movies, theaters, and upcoming releases is a breeze as well. There’s an option to view DVD releases, too. You can sort searches by release date, title, or score.
If organization and simplicity is what’s important to you, check out Now Playing. It’s free, easy to use, and has a plethora of options to utilize.

3. Moviefone by AOL
Moviefone by AOL isn’t so much about the ratings of movies as it is about the films themselves and the stars. The interface is nice, minus some ads that pop up from time to time. (Remember, it’s free.) The basic list of films is very trimmed down, showing only the title and rating. Selecting the film brings up a detailed page with a 5 star rating system, photos, release date information, synopsis, and more.
When you’re on a movie’s page, you can view the actors/actresses that are in the film with a detailed profile, a la IMDb. You can easily favorite an actor/actress by pressing the heart symbol on their profile. You can also favorite theaters, and manage your favorites list.
There’s a search option that can find anything from movies to celebrities. There’s also a trailers sections dedicated to movie trailers that you can watch on the fly. You can check theaters near you and see what the theater is showing at the time as well.
If the critic’s views aren’t as important to you, but your own opinion is, check out Moviefone. The focus on your favorite movies, theaters, and celebrities is perfect for the casual movie goer.
