Until today, Apple’s iTunes gifting service has only been available for purchase and gifting of music, video and TV shows …
Today that all changes. Just in time for the iPad launch Apple has activated the ability to “Gift” all paid iPhone applications. The service works just like gifting a song to someone. Clicking on the right hand arrow in iTunes next to the applications price will bring up a contextual pop-up menu with the new option “Gift This App”. Tapping the option will bring up the following screen and ask you to enter your recipients name, e-mail and personal message.
The email address you provide should be your recipients iTunes account and after you click ‘continue’, the app will be immediately gifted to that account. Next time your recipient logs in they’ll see they have a pending download on their account and tapping to download the item will download it immediately to their app library.
The service, just like song gifting, is another way of purchasing content from the iTunes store for any occasion, without the necessary need for iTunes Gift Cards.
Update: It’s worth noting that as many readers have pointed out, you will need a credit or debit card attached to your iTunes account to gift applications to others. iTunes gift cards are not a payment option.
