As I’m sure most of you know, Apple originally limited the number of pages available on the springboard of the iPhone and iPod Touch to 9. Â With the advent of OS 3.0, two pages were added to the springboard, allowing a total of 11. By jail-breaking your device, you could use all kinds of neat workarounds and features to access more applications …
However, this option is tech-knowledge heavy, often buggy, and voids your warranty. I choose not to jailbreak. I feel that Apple have done a great job with the devices, and I will let them run them how they like. When OS 4.0 comes this summer, Folders will be activated, rendering this post useless. In the meantime, enjoy this alternative.
I have around 1,400 apps in iTunes. 11 pages just doesn’t even get close to holding all the apps I really want on my iPod. I have discovered a way to unlock unlimited pages of springboard, without a jailbreak, and I think everyone should know about it.
Step 1 – Fill up all the pages of apps on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Â It shouldn’t be too hard, and if you can’t .. well, you don’t need more pages do you? 🙂
Step 2 – Move the Voice Memos to the very last spot on the very last page. Yes, it has to be the Voice Memos app. Other default apps such as Safari might work, but Voice Memos is most effective.
Step 3 – Swipe back one page. (page 10) Take any app from that page, and pull it forward to the last page. This pushes Voice Memos off the end. Step 4 – Make sure all the pages of the iPhone/ iPod are full again. You might need to download some apps, or you could save our webclip to your homescreen. Â A good way to know that all the pages are full is to check Safari; the ‘Add to Home Screen’ button will be gone. Step 5 – Restart your iPhone. Step 6 – as you can see, the Voice Memos app pushed the last app on the first page off the end, creating a new page. Lather, Rinse, Repeat.
There doesn’t seem to be a limit to this exploit, I’ve gotten up to 22 pages before now. After a certain number, the extra page indicator dots stop showing at the bottom of the springboard, but the new pages still appear.
There are a few compatibility issues with iTunes: If you try to organize your homescreens through iTunes, the extra pages disappear. However, installing newly purchased applications either on iTunes or on the device works perfectly. Â
There you have it, unlimited homescreens.
