Quick Blast: Penultimate for iPad

Penultimate is a very intuitively designed note taking application for the iPad. With its iWork-esque interface and handy features, it’s a welcome addition to the selection of productivity applications currently available for the iPad.

When you first launch Penultimate, you’re presented with a carousel of notebooks for your filling. One of them is blank, and another is a tutorial on all the different things you can do in Penultimate. The tools you’re able to use are quite basic; a pen with varying thickness based on your speed, an eraser, and a clear page button. What makes this application different from the already available iPad note taking applications is the simplistic and easy to use interface.

Would I recommend this app to someone wanting a note taking and doodling application on their iPad? Yes, I would, as long as it’s understood that this is not an application for creating the next Picasso or for writing the next great novel.

What would I change? It would be nice to have a highlighter and the option of a different color pen, but this is still a great application in its current state.

Okay, I'm mostly on board here. The app is cool and I was pretty stoked to use it, but I found writing with my fat finger sucks. So I found some conductive foam and shaped a small stylus – that took care of that problem. The second issue is you really can't use the app in landscape. The erase and new page buttons fall off the page and you have to scroll down to get to them – plus it won't fill the screen with your page. You'd think it would at lease do a small zoom-in.

I'm still hopeful that I'll start using it more. Just have to force myself I guess.
