Apple Tells Developers to Get Ready for iPhone Duo

Apple has barely finished introducing the iPhone Duo, and it’s already turning its attention to the people who will make the new foldable feel useful: developers.

The company has launched a new “Get ready for iPhone Duo” page on Apple Developer, giving developers a head start on adapting their apps for the radically different form factor. Apple says the page is designed to help developers “prepare your apps for launch on iPhone Duo.” (Apple Developer)

And there’s quite a bit to get through.

A crash course in iPhone Duo

Apple has published a collection of six new videos covering everything from design to cameras and multi-display experiences.

They include:

  • Design for iPhone Duo — an introduction to the design principles behind the foldable and how interfaces need to adapt between its different poses and displays. (Apple Developer)
  • Prepare your app for iPhone Duo — a practical look at flexible layouts, size classes, safe areas and testing an app using the iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode. (Apple Developer)
  • Raise the bar with iPhone Duo — a closer look at how navigation, toolbars and tab bars can adapt to the Duo’s displays. (Apple Developer)
  • Strike a pose with adaptive layouts on iPhone Duo — covering things like the hinge, reserved regions and layouts that change as the phone opens and closes. (Apple Developer)
  • Leverage multiple displays and scenes on iPhone Duo — exploring multitasking, multiple scenes, hinge-angle changes and experiences that span the two displays. (Apple Developer)
  • Build a great camera experience for iPhone Duo — focusing on adapting camera experiences to the new hardware.

That’s a pretty substantial developer briefing arriving alongside the product itself.

Apple is clearly expecting developers to think beyond simply making an existing iPhone app stretch across a larger screen. The Duo introduces different display configurations, a physical hinge, new safe-area considerations and entirely new ways of presenting content.

The company’s own guidance recommends using adaptive layouts rather than making assumptions about a particular screen size or orientation. Developers can also use Xcode and Device Hub to simulate different Duo poses and test how their apps respond as the device opens, closes and changes configuration. (Apple Developer)

Apple is also bringing developers into the room

The videos aren’t the only help Apple is offering.

Apple says iPhone Duo workshops will be coming later this month, giving developers the opportunity to optimise their apps and explore resizability across different screen sizes. (Apple Developer)

There will also be two online iPhone Duo Group Labs, where developers can speak with Apple engineers and designers:

  • September 16, 8–9 p.m. PT
  • September 17, 8–9 a.m. PT

Apple is also planning dedicated Q&As covering Photos & Camera, SwiftUI and UIKit on September 23. (Apple Developer)

And then there are the tools themselves. Apple says Xcode 27.1 beta will provide the latest SDKs for building, running and testing apps for iPhone Duo, with the release coming later this month. Additional documentation covering designing for Duo and preparing apps for its dynamically resizing layouts is also on the way. (Apple Developer)

This is the part that could make or break Duo

The hardware might be the headline, but the apps are going to determine whether iPhone Duo actually feels like a new kind of iPhone or simply an enormous folding screen.

The company appears to understand that.

Rather than leaving developers to figure everything out once the first devices arrive, it’s giving them a pretty detailed roadmap for adapting existing apps — and, hopefully, building some completely new experiences around the Duo’s form factor.

The videos are available right now, so if you’re a developer with an app in the App Store, this might be a good time to start folding things into this unfolding roadmap.
