Apple has done something rather unexpected with the iPhone Duo: it has moved the Dynamic Island.
And not just a little bit.

on iPhone today – Apple
Because the iPhone Duo is designed around a much wider, foldable display, Apple has completely rethought where some of iOS’ familiar controls should live. The Dynamic Island is now vertical, running along the side of the display rather than sitting across the top. (Apple)

It sounds like a small change, but it makes a lot of sense once you see the Duo in action.
When the iPhone Duo is open, you’re essentially holding a small tablet in your hands. Keeping important controls stretched across the top would mean reaching further up the screen, so Apple has shifted them towards the side instead.
The redesigned Dynamic Island can still expand to show things like Live Activities and alerts, but now it fits vertically into the Duo’s new layout. The same approach carries across both the outer and inner displays, helping the interface feel consistent whether the phone is folded or completely open. (Apple)
And the Dynamic Island isn’t the only thing that moved.
The Dock has moved too
Apple has also taken the Home Screen Dock and moved it from the bottom of the display to the side.

It is now arranged vertically, putting your favourite apps much closer to where your thumb naturally sits when holding the Duo. Apple says the move is designed to maximise vertical space for content, while also making navigation and controls easier to reach. (Apple)
That means the Duo’s enormous inner display isn’t simply an iPhone interface stretched across a bigger canvas.
Apple has actually changed the interface around the way the device is held.

When the Duo is open, iOS 27 can show two Home Screen pages, with Today View sitting on the left as a vertically scrolling column of widgets. The status bar has also been redesigned, with its information tucked into a small circular system in the corner. (Apple)
It is a surprisingly big rethink of something we’ve become completely accustomed to.
For years, the iPhone has had its most important system elements running along the top and bottom of the screen. On the Duo, Apple has effectively turned that layout on its side.
And honestly, it makes the whole thing feel much more intentional.
The iPhone Duo isn’t just an iPhone that happens to fold in half. Apple has redesigned iOS around the fact that it folds.
That might end up being one of the most important parts of the whole thing.
