As you can imagine here at RazorianFly we get through a crazy amount of games on a weekly basis! When I saw the previews of Chillingo’s Underground title a few months back, It caught my eye and I just couldn’t wait to get a hold of it. Now it’s finally arrived bringing everything it promised, and more.
Underground which is developed by Kinelco and published by Chillingo approaches the ‘Side Scrolling Shooter’ genre in a very fresh and vibrant way. With it’s sound track provided by PpD3 and artwork from Frames accompanied by exhilarating gameplay and intense visual cut scenes, this game is sure to have you addicted by the end of level one!
Once you first pick up Underground you’ll be greeted by an array of crazy visuals and graphics, before you start your ‘trip’ into the underground. Throughout the game your trip is split up into different levels and through the journey you’ll gather more pieces of the story line, also bearing witness to some of the brilliant cut scenes and artwork.
The control system is that of a simple one, instructions are certainly not needed! You have two options, you can either control the space ship via the accelerometer or by sliding your finger around the touch screen! Personally I much prefer using the accelerometer as it feels so much more natural, and keeps your fingers clear of the screen!
One of the best things about Underground is the way it constantly keeps you interested. Whether its by displaying cut scenes, or with the massive collection of over 60 enemies which all have vastly different behaviors. In my opinion, this is a really important aspect of a side scrolling shooter – to keep you from loosing interest – and in just the first few levels of your trip you’ll see a huge bout of different enemies, some uglier than others! Of course to defeat these enemies you’ll be needing an arsenal of weapons. You run through the game equipped with a standard, default weapon but along the way various weapons from multi-shots to more powerful single bullet weapons appear all with limited usage.
The thing that really brings this game all together besides the gameplay is the music and artwork, admittedly I am a big fan of the hip-hop genre and Pp3D certainly brings the music score of this application up to ‘amazing’ levels. Every time you destroy an enemy instead of getting the generic sound of death, you get a quirky vinyl scratch sound. The graffiti artwork along side the 3D renderings really makes this game visually stunning and every level a pleasure to view and play.
Underground brings a refreshing new twist on side scrolling shooters with intense gameplay, fantastic visuals, cut screens and addictive game play. If only every game in the App Store could be as polished and complete as Underground. These guys have hit the nail on the head.
A must for anyone with an iPhone, and a purchase you certainly won’t regret!
