Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and while they might look familiar at first glance, there is quite a lot going on underneath that familiar Pro exterior.

This is also the first Pro iPhone generation introduced under new Apple CEO John Ternus — and Apple has packed it with a new chip, a seriously upgraded camera system, better battery life, a redesigned Dynamic Island and a much more capable version of Siri.
And yes, it’s going to cost you.
Meet the iPhone 18 Pro
The iPhone 18 Pro continues with a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max keeps its enormous 6.9-inch display. Both have ProMotion with refresh rates up to 120Hz.
The design itself hasn’t been completely reinvented. Instead, Apple has refined the Pro formula with a durable aluminium unibody, colour-matched back glass and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front.

There are four finishes this time around:
- Black
- Silver
- Glacier
- Burgundy
And Burgundy is easily the colour that’s going to get people talking.
The Dynamic Island has also been redesigned. It’s smaller while giving Apple more room to display information, and it can now show up to three Live Activities simultaneously.
So, yes, the Dynamic Island is still here. It’s just getting a little more useful.
The camera is the big one
If there’s one reason Apple is pushing the iPhone 18 Pro as a major upgrade, it’s the camera.
For the first time, the 48MP Fusion Main camera has a variable aperture.
That means the camera can physically adjust how much light enters the lens, rather than relying entirely on computational photography to produce different results.

There are four aperture settings:
ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0.
At ƒ/1.48, the camera can let in more light for low-light photography. At ƒ/4, it can increase depth of field and keep more of a scene in focus.
And you don’t have to let the iPhone make all the decisions. The new Pro Controls let you manually adjust aperture, shutter speed and white balance, while a live histogram gives you another way of judging exposure.
Basically, Apple is giving the iPhone camera a little more of the controls you’d normally expect from a dedicated camera.

The rest of the Pro camera system gets an upgrade too, with 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide and 48MP Fusion Telephoto cameras.
There’s also an updated computational photography pipeline and new Photographic Styles controls for texture and grain.
For video, Apple has added the ability to apply Cinematic effects after recording footage at up to 60fps, while Time-lapse can now be captured in 4K Dolby Vision HDR.
And there’s a rather clever improvement to Audio Mix, which can produce higher-quality voices and isolate music.
Apple Reference Image is surprisingly interesting
Apple is also tackling something that has become increasingly important: knowing whether a photograph is actually authentic.
With Apple Reference Image, the iPhone 18 Pro can create a reference version of a photograph using signed sensor data.

That reference image can then be viewed alongside the edited version in Photos, making it possible to see whether changes have been made.
Apple is also planning support for the SynthID standard to help identify images generated or edited with AI.
It’s a very 2026 feature — but potentially a very useful one.
A20 Pro is doing a lot of the heavy lifting
Inside both phones is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, built using a 2-nanometre process.
Apple says it has a six-core CPU and seven-core GPU, with the GPU delivering up to 40 per cent faster graphics performance than the A19 Pro.
There’s also a new Dual 16-core Neural Engine, giving the chip twice the AI processing power of its predecessor.

And Apple hasn’t ignored heat.
The iPhone 18 Pro gets a redesigned vapour chamber with three times the surface area of the previous generation. Apple says this can deliver up to a 40 per cent improvement in sustained performance.
That should matter particularly for things like gaming, video editing and heavier on-device AI workloads.
The phones also feature Apple’s new N1 wireless networking chip, bringing Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread support.
There’s also a new C2 cellular modem, which Apple says provides faster uploads while using less energy.
Battery life gets a serious boost
Battery life is another big focus this year.
Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro can deliver up to 36 hours of video playback on eSIM-only models, while the Pro Max can reach up to 45 hours under the same measurement.
The Pro Max is also claimed to deliver up to six hours more video playback than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Charging is faster too.
The iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50 per cent in around 15 minutes with a compatible power adapter, while five minutes of charging on the Pro Max can provide around seven hours of video playback.
That’s the kind of upgrade you’ll notice far more often than another tiny benchmark improvement.
And then there’s Siri
The iPhone 18 Pro launches with iOS 27, bringing Apple’s next generation of Apple Intelligence along for the ride.
Most notably, there’s Siri AI.

This is a much more conversational Siri that can understand personal context, find information across your apps, take actions on your behalf and understand what’s happening on screen.
It can also work with the Camera app, letting you point your iPhone at something and ask Siri questions about what you’re looking at.
There’s a dedicated Siri app too, allowing conversations to continue across Apple devices.
Apple is keeping the privacy angle front and centre, with processing taking place on-device where possible and Private Cloud Compute handling tasks that need more power.
Other Apple Intelligence features include improved Clean Up, photorealistic Image Playground creations, smarter Suggestions, Visual Intelligence, new Shortcuts capabilities and Safari’s new Notify Me feature.
There’s a new front camera too
The front-facing camera gets an upgrade to an 18MP Centre Stage camera.

Centre Stage can automatically keep people in frame during photos and video calls, while the camera also supports Dual Capture and improved video stabilisation.
So if you’re constantly using your iPhone for FaceTime, selfies or recording yourself, there’s quite a bit here beyond the rear cameras.
Storage starts at 256GB
Both models start with 256GB of storage, with options going all the way up to 2TB.
Current UK pricing is:
iPhone 18 Pro
● 256GB: £1,199
● 512GB: £1,399
● 1TB: £1,799
● 2TB: £2,399
iPhone 18 Pro Max
● 256GB: £1,299
● 512GB: £1,499
● 1TB: £1,899
● 2TB: £2,499
The 2TB option is particularly eye-watering, but it’s also worth remembering that the Pro Max is the model Apple is positioning for people who genuinely need huge amounts of local storage.
The starting prices are £100 higher than the equivalent iPhone 17 Pro models, too. (TechRadar)
When can you order one?
Here’s the important bit.
Pre-orders open Friday, September 12.
In the UK, Apple says pre-orders begin at 1:00pm BST.
The phones will then arrive in stores and start reaching customers on:
Friday, September 18.
So you’ve got a little time to decide whether Burgundy is calling your name. (Apple)
Apple is also offering Trade In, with customers trading in eligible devices able to put the credit towards their new iPhone.
So, is this a big upgrade?
I’d say this is one of those iPhone generations where the headline doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story.
At a glance, the iPhone 18 Pro isn’t radically different from the iPhone 17 Pro. It’s still an aluminium Pro iPhone with the same familiar two sizes and the same basic design language.

But start digging and there’s quite a lot here.
A variable-aperture 48MP camera, proper manual camera controls, a new A20 Pro chip, improved thermal management, significantly better battery life, a redesigned Dynamic Island, a new modem, an 18MP Centre Stage camera and the next generation of Apple Intelligence.
And then there’s the slightly amusing fact that Apple has simultaneously introduced the iPhone Duo — its first foldable iPhone — meaning the Pro is no longer automatically the most futuristic iPhone in the room.
That might actually make the iPhone 18 Pro more interesting.
It’s the familiar iPhone, just pushed considerably further.
And for anyone who doesn’t want to spend £1,999 on Apple’s new foldable, this is probably the iPhone for you.
