Apple Just Made the iPhone Foldable — Meet iPhone Duo

Well, it’s finally happened.

After years of rumours, leaks, renders, concept videos and an almost ridiculous amount of speculation, Apple has officially made a foldable iPhone.

And it’s called iPhone Duo.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is now very real — and, perhaps appropriately for the moment, Apple’s own website opens with the rather simple line: “Hello, hello.”

This is not an iPhone Pro with a clever hinge. It’s a completely new form factor for the iPhone, with a 7.6-inch inner display that folds down to a 5.4-inch outer display when you want something smaller and easier to handle.

Apple describes it as “the largest iPhone display ever”, while also calling it foldable, poseable and durable. And honestly, seeing those words attached to an actual iPhone feels a little strange.

In a good way.

An iPhone that can change shape

Open the Duo up and you get a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display — 50 per cent larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

It also gets a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display for those moments when you don’t need the whole thing opened up.

Both displays feature ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On display functionality and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness.

The inner display also gets a custom nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare, while Apple says its ten ultra-thin layers help create a remarkably smooth and flat viewing surface.

And then there’s the interesting bit: Apple has designed iOS 27 around the fact that this thing can physically change shape.

You can use two apps side-by-side with Split View, watch a video while using another app, type on a wider keyboard, prop Duo up for hands-free FaceTime or simply stand it up and use StandBy.

Apple calls it “Reimagined iOS.”

That might sound like marketing speak, but this is probably the part of Duo that matters most. Apple isn’t just taking iOS and stretching it across a bigger screen — it’s trying to make the folding itself useful.

And yes, it’s properly premium

iPhone Duo comes in two colours: Star White and Night Sky.

There’s a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, Ceramic Shield on the front and back, a scratch-resistant coating on the inner display and IP68 water and dust resistance.

Apple has also designed the hinge to open and close with what it describes as smooth, balanced resistance.

In other words, this isn’t being presented as a fragile first attempt.

Apple really wants this thing to feel like an iPhone first and a foldable second.

The cameras are pretty serious, too

Around the back is a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, consisting of:

  • 48MP Fusion Main
  • 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide
  • 0.5x, 1x and 2x optical-quality zoom options
  • 24MP and 48MP high-resolution photography

  • Macro photography
  • Photographic Styles 3
  • Cinematic mode
  • Dolby Vision video up to 4K at 120fps
  • Smart focus tracking
  • Improved low-light video

There’s also a 12MP Centre Stage front camera, with ultra-stabilised video, Dual Capture and Centre Stage for video calls.

And because this is a foldable, Apple has been able to do some genuinely fun things with the cameras.

Smart Take can detect when everyone is ready before taking a photo, meaning you don’t have to sprint into position before the timer runs out.

Duo Preview lets the person you’re photographing see a live preview on the outer display, so they can sort out their framing before you take the shot.

And Kid Cue puts playful animations on the outer display to encourage children to actually look at the camera.

There’s even Duo FaceTime, which lets people nearby join a call on the outer display.

Some of these feel like small details, but they’re exactly the sort of things that make a foldable feel less like a gimmick.

A20 Pro is doing the heavy lifting

Inside is Apple’s new A20 Pro, with a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Apple says the CPU is up to 20 per cent faster than A19 Pro, with up to 50 per cent more memory bandwidth.

There’s also an advanced thermal management system with a vapour chamber, which should help keep performance under control when you’re throwing games, AI workloads and everything else at that enormous display.

And, naturally, Apple Intelligence is along for the ride.

Siri gets a much bigger playground

iPhone Duo launches with Apple’s new Siri AI, powered by Apple Intelligence.

Siri can have more natural conversations, understand personal context, take actions across apps and use online information to answer questions.

There’s also a dedicated Siri app, Siri functionality inside Camera and the ability to use Siri to help write and edit text.

Then there’s the wider iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence package: Clean Up, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, Writing Tools, contextual suggestions, smarter Safari tabs and more capable Shortcuts.

The larger Duo display should make some of these features particularly interesting.

A giant foldable screen is a pretty nice place to have an AI assistant sitting alongside whatever you’re actually doing.

Battery life hasn’t been forgotten

Foldables have traditionally had to make compromises when it comes to battery life, but Apple has taken a different approach here.

iPhone Duo has an iPhone-first dual-battery system, with the internal design and eSIM-only architecture allowing Apple to make better use of the available space.

Apple quotes up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer display.

It also supports fast wired charging, reaching up to 50 per cent in around 20 minutes.

And yes, MagSafe is supported.

There’s even Apple Pencil support

This one might have sounded completely bonkers a few years ago, but iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil (USB-C).

The support is coming later this year, so it won’t be available from day one, but the enormous 7.6-inch display suddenly makes a lot more sense when you start thinking about sketching, marking things up or simply scribbling something down.

An iPhone that folds open into something approaching a mini tablet and supports Apple Pencil?

That’s a sentence I didn’t expect to be writing in 2026.

Touch ID is back

There’s another little surprise hiding in Duo.

Rather than Face ID, iPhone Duo uses Touch ID integrated into the side button.

Courtesy of Apple

It means authentication works whether the phone is open or closed, without needing a separate Face ID system taking up space in either display.

And yes — after all these years, Touch ID is back on an iPhone flagship.

Storage gets seriously silly

Apple is offering iPhone Duo with:

256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB of storage.

In the UK, pricing starts at £1,999 for 256GB, rising to £2,199 for 512GB, £2,599 for 1TB and a frankly enormous £3,199 for 2TB.

That’s a lot of iPhone.

Pre-orders open at 1pm UK time on Oct 16, with iPhone Duo officially launching, delivering and showing up in retail stores on October 23.

And suddenly all those rumours about Apple’s first foldable being a ridiculously expensive, ultra-premium iPhone don’t seem quite so ridiculous.

This is the biggest iPhone change in years

It’s easy to look at iPhone Duo and simply see Apple’s answer to Samsung, Google and everyone else who has been making foldable phones for years.

Courtesy of Apple

But I think the more interesting part is that Apple has waited this long to do it.

Rather than simply making an iPhone that folds, Apple has built a phone around the idea that it can be closed, opened, stood up, angled, flipped between displays and used in other completely different orientations.

Courtesy of Apple

That makes Duo feel less like “Apple finally made a foldable” and more like Apple asking what an iPhone can actually become when it isn’t restricted to being a rectangle.

And after nearly two decades of iPhones looking broadly the same from the front, that’s a pretty big deal.

The iPhone has finally learned how to fold.

And somehow, iPhone Duo already sounds like it belongs.
